Amaranthus caudatus

Sagittarius (Amaranthus caudatus) or garden amaranth is a plant of the amaranth family. It is native to South America, where centuries ago it was one of the key ingredients in the diet of the local people, making it known as the “Gold of the Incas.” Amaranth was considered a sacred plant, giving strength to warriors to fight other tribes. Today, not only on plates, every so often amaranth can be found in gardens and parks as an ornamental plant. Its long, dangling, burgundy stems are a remarkable addition to compositions and handmade ornaments. Stabilized amaranth retains its natural color, is extremely durable and can serve as a natural decoration for years. It will work well in modern bouquets of dried flowers.

Amaranth - appearance and characteristics of the plant

Hanging amaranth grows from 60cm to 100cm. It forms heavily branched stems, covered with broad-leaved leaves of intense green color. The long panicles, which are the main decorative element of the plant, are covered with amaranth luz green small flowers, which are clustered in a spike. It is important when planting the plants into the ground to maintain adequate spacing between the seedlings to ensure their free growth. The spacing should be 30x45cm. Plants are planted in late April. From July to late autumn, the dangling amaranth will delight with its color in flowerbeds or in floral bouquets for vases.

Hanging amaranth - occurrence and cultivation

Sagebrush is one of the oldest and noblest plants cultivated in the world. Amaranth naturally occurs in the intertropical zone. It is a thermophilic plant, so it easily established itself in Africa and Asia. In Poland we are unlikely to encounter wild amaranth, but it reigns supreme in gardens and parks as a beautiful decoration. Amaranthus likes sunny positions, feels best in humus, calcareous, light soils. The soil should be slightly moist, during a drought remember to water regularly. These two conditions will make amaranth produce large inflorescences and bloom abundantly until the first frosts.
Properties of amaranthus
Amaranthus sagebrush is a highly valued plant. In the kitchen we use its seeds, which are used to make gluten-free flour, ideal for people who suffer from celiac disease. It is a source of numerous vitamins A, B, C, minerals - iron, zinc, potassium, fiber and protein. It is a great partner in the fight against the greenhouse effect, as it absorbs twice as much carbon dioxide as other plants.

With what plants to compose amaranth?

Stabilized amaranth will be perfect in dried flower bouquets. Its intense color contrasts well with the other dried flowers. It looks great in the company of dried lunaria, stabilized gypsophila, poppies. Due to the fact that the plant has long panicles in the composition for a vase, amaranth perfectly “unites” the bouquet with the ground on which it stands. Because of its unusual appearance, we encourage you to experiment with additions to amaranth - dried grasses, dried cereals - you will be surprised yourself how many plants go with this beautiful plant. If you go for simplicity enough amaranth will look equally impressive simply solo in a large glass vase.
