Mimosa

Also known as silver acacia, mimosa is a shrub that delights with its intense yellow color and is one of the first to appear in gardens in early spring, when everything is waking up to life after winter. Naturally growing mimosa can be found on the warm Australian plains, as an ornamental plant it has spread throughout the world. In Poland, its cultivation is possible only in pots due to its lack of frost resistance.

Mimosa

Mimosa (Acacia dealbata), or silver acacia or silver vitae, takes the form of a sizable tree or shrub in the bean family. It is native to warm Australia, where we find wild-growing specimens. Its numerous yellow flowers hanging on the branches make the silver acacia look incredibly striking in gardens. It has gained popularity all over the world: in Italy, the mimosa is given to ladies on Women's Day, in Montenegro it is a symbol of the seaside town of Herceg Novi, where a festival of these fragrant yellow flowers is celebrated, and in Greece it has been considered a symbol of innocence and purity for centuries. Dried silver acacia is used in dry bouquets and natural decorations.

Mimosa - plant characteristics

The silver acacia tree grows up to 30m. Note that in pot cultivation it will not be as showy, growing then up to 7m. The mimosa forms one or trunks topped with a magnificent, irregular, spreading crown. Initially flaccid shoots grow into long, woody branches, on which alternate oval leaves grow doubly or triply pinnate. They are confusingly reminiscent of the leaves of the shame mimosa. The leaves have a silvery tarnish responsible for their gray-green color.

Silver acacia's pompom-like inflorescences are the most eye-catching. The plant in early spring develops small, spherical, bright yellow flowers with a pleasant fragrance. Collected on the tops of the shoots, they form showy, panicle-shaped inflorescences densely distributed on the crown of the tree. They transform into pod-like, brown fruits filled with numerous seeds.

Mimosa - occurance & cultivation

In the natural environment we will meet mimosa in Australia. its cultivation can be found in New Zealand, North America, Europe, Africa. It belongs to tropical, thermophilic plants, it requires a lot of sunlight and shelter from strong winds. If there are temperatures below 0 degrees it is only possible to grow mimosa in a pot (for example, in Poland), because the shrub is not frost resistant). During the summer we keep the silver acacia in the garden, for the winter we put it in a bright room (it does not generally shed its leaves for the winter). The soil should be permeable, fertile, humus, slightly moist. The plant does not require regular pruning. It tolerates this treatment well, you can slightly correct the habit of the mimosa thanks to it, but be sure not to cut it too short.

With which dried plants to compose mimosa?

Fresh and dried bouquets of silver acacia are valued for their decorative qualities, and are used in floristry. Most often we will meet it in colorful spring compositions. It looks beautifully accompanied by dried flowers such as stabilized eucalyptus, fennel, dried flax. It will be a perfect addition to rustic style interiors. Remember that the listed dried plants are only a suggestion, do not be afraid to experiment and combine the most diverse species of dried and live plants.
