Protea

Protea (Protea pendula) known in Poland as silverleaf is a perennial plant that occurs naturally in South Africa. The plant comes from the silverleaf family. Protea numbers nearly 100 species. The name Protea comes from the Greek god Prometheus, who was able to change his forms. The same is true of this unusual plant - during its development, protea changes so much that they were considered different species while growing. Silversmith mainly acts as an ornamental plant, which with its unusual appearance enriches dry bouquets and compositions.

Protea - appearance and characteristics of the plant

Protea shrub grows to about 1.5 m. and is decorated with flowers of unusual appearance. Numerous hairy leaves in red, pink, cream form showy inflorescences. They look like colorful cones, which, when bifurcated, show a bowl-shaped or convex interior of tubular flowers. Silverberry can reach impressive sizes - inflorescences as large as 30cm in diameter. Protea grows on a tough, woody stem, the plant is not limp which makes it readily used in bouquets.

Protea occurrence and cultivation

The natural habitat of protea is only in Africa, and more specifically in the regions of South Africa. The plant even appears in the emblem of this country. It is most often encountered in valleys. Protea has adapted extremely well to high temperatures, fires and accompanying dust - it is able to recover very quickly even when the entire area has been completely consumed by fire. And this is all thanks to its thick roots, which enable express regeneration.

Protea is one of the plants that are easy to grow. It likes a sunny position - it is thermophilic - it feels best in low-phosphorus soil. The substrate should be moist (without stagnant water) and aerated. It is recommended to plant protea in pots, because in summer it should be protected from frost. In spring and summer with peace of mind we can keep it in the garden or on the terrace. In winter, when the protea goes into dormancy, it should be placed in the house or greenhouse. Silverberry is extremely resistant to pests. remember to regularly trim and remove dead shoots, and the protea will long please our eye.
