Trichinella, or setaria commonly called foxtail, is a plant in the panicle family. It is characterized by long, narrow leaves and flower spikes that grow at the ends of the stems. Setaria - appearance and characteristics of the plant


The leaves of setaria are long, narrow and sharply pointed. It grows from clumps depending on the variety up to 140cm. Its most characteristic part is the dangling, fluffy panicles, thanks to which it owes its name - fox tail. Flowers can take on different colors depending on the species - yellow, brown, green and even red. After flowering, setaria produces seeds, which are contained in small, spherical structures. These fruits can have different colors and textures, and are usually slightly hairy.

Setaria - occurrence and cultivation


The origin of setaria is mainly associated with areas of Southeast Asia, Africa and South America. These plants originally grow in a variety of habitats, from forests to open spaces, where suitable conditions for their growth can be found. Setaria is widely distributed throughout the world.

Setaria, especially some species, is grown as a forage crop in some regions. Growing setaria is relatively easy, as it is a drought-tolerant plant and easily adapts to different soil conditions. The plant is fast-growing and can provide valuable food for cattle and other livestock .To grow setaria, it must be given access to full sunlight and soil with adequate moisture.
