Echinops

Echinops is a perennial whose greatest ornament is the blue flowers gathered in spherical baskets. The leaves are large, heavily lobed and spiky, green in color - and silvery underneath. The Latin name of the plant comes from hedgehog (echinus), to which the original shape of the inflorescences was compared.

Echinops

Echinops is a plant belonging to the aster family (Asteraceae). It is recognizable by its spherical, coneflower-like inflorescences, which are distinguished by their blue-purple hue. It is mainly used as an ornamental plant in gardens or in the form of dried flowers used in bouquets, garlands and crafts.

Echinops - appearance and characteristics of the plant

Echinops is recognizable by its spherical, coneflower-like inflorescences, which are distinguished by their blue-purple hue. Echinops usually reaches a height of 80 cm to as much as 1.5 m, and its leaves have a distinctly serrated texture and silvery color, which further adds to the plant's ornamentality. The inflorescences grow on long, straight stems, giving the plant elegance and lightness. In its dried form, the Echinops maintains its shape, making it an ideal decorative element.

Echinops - occurrence and cultivation

Echinops occurs naturally in regions of Southern Europe, Asia and North Africa. In Poland it is cultivated as an ornamental plant, as well as growing wild in dry, sunny areas. The plant prefers well-sunny sites and permeable soils with moderate moisture. It is highly tolerant of drought and harsh soil conditions, making it easy to grow. The scallop blooms in summer, and its flowers can survive on the stems for many weeks, adding to its decorative value in the garden.

Dried Echinops - how to use?

Dried Echinops is a popular decorative element, which is perfect for floral compositions, wreaths and reeds. Thanks to its unique spherical shape, it introduces an interesting geometric accent to interior design. It can be successfully used to decorate tables, vases and as a complement to rustic and natural compositions. In addition to floristics, dried scallop is also used in handicrafts, creating original holiday and occasional decorations.

With which dried plants to combine Echinops ?

Echinops goes perfectly with other dried plants, such as dried poppies, phalaris, or lavender, which contrast in texture and color with its spherical flowers. Thanks to its distinctive form, it can be used as the main accent in bouquets, while it also works well with softer dried grasses, such as dried flax or miscanthus. Its intense color perfectly harmonizes with the neutral shades of dried flowers, introducing a somewhat lively, yet elegant accent to the composition.
