Broom bloom
Broom bloom (Cytisus scoparius), or broom broom, is a species of shrub in the bean family. The plant is known by many names: broom broom broom, hare pea, hogweed. It is commonly found in Central, Western, Southern Europe, among others. The broom because of its appearance - broom-like stems - was once used to make brooms. Currently, it mainly serves as an ornamental plant in gardens or we can find it in dried flower bouquets and handicrafts.
Broom bloom - characteristics of the plant
Broom broom grows to a maximum height of 2m. Broom bloom leaves remain green all year round, are quite small and narrow, growing singly at the top of the plant on its thin stems. During the flowering period (May-June) the shrub is abundantly covered with inflorescences. The flowers are large and butterfly-shaped. By nature, the bloom is yellow in color, although we can find pink, red and bicolor varieties. The broom is an extremely ornate plant when in bloom, so it is readily planted in home gardens. After flowering, narrow hairy pods appear, which burst and eject seeds.
Broom bloom - occurence and cultivation
Broom bloom is found in Europe, among other places in Poland. It grows most often in Pomerania and mountainous areas (Sudetes). In addition, it can be found growing wild in mid-forest clearings and forest edges. Broom bloom grows best on sandy, dry slightly acidic soils. It is great for sowing “difficult areas”.
As a garden plant, it is easy to grow and drought tolerant. It requires a warm, sunny position. It is worth remembering that broom, due to its stilt-like root system, does not tolerate transplanting well, so it is worth choosing a place for it in the garden where it can grow for years. Broom bloom does not require annual pruning. After flowering, you can cut off dry, damaged shoots, overripe inflorescences - this will give the shrub a regular habit. Broom bloom is resistant to pests, it tolerates frosts well.
