Oats - appearance and characteristics of the plant

Oat is characterized by straight, erect stems that can reach a height of 60 to 120 cm, depending on the variety and growing conditions. Its leaves are long, narrow and flat, arranged alternately on the stem, and each leaf has a characteristic long, shaggy tongue. The oat inflorescence is an ear, consisting of many individual flowers, organized into long, narrow spikelets called panicles. These panicles grow from the nodes of the stem. Oats produce grains, known as oat fruits, set on the stem in spikelets. Oat grains are oval, flat and have sheaths. They usually take on shades of yellow-brown to brown.

Oats occurrence and cultivation

Oats is a plant originally native to areas of Western Asia and Europe. However, due to its adaptability and widespread cultivation, it is now found all over the world. Oats can be found in a variety of climatic zones, in both temperate and cool regions. The plant prefers moist soils of moderate fertility. Oats are grown from seed, which is usually sown in early spring or late fall, depending on the climate of the region. The seeds are evenly dispersed in the crop field. It is harvested at maturity, when the ears are fully ripe but not yet completely dry. The ears are cut and then dried before further processing.
