Sorghum

Sorghum (Sorghum) a beautiful annual cereal in the panicle family with an unusual appearance, is also a valued food. In Africa it holds a special place as one of the most important edible plants. In Poland, due to our climate, the plant has a limited period to produce ripe fruit, which means that its importance in our country remains small. Sorghum is also a decorative crop that adds character and elegance to any arrangement. Its durability and natural charm make it an irreplaceable addition to floral arrangements, harvest wreaths, dry bouquets for vases. In our offer you will find dried sorghum from Polish cultivation.

Sorghum - appearance and characteristics of the plant

Sorghum is a tall cereal, which can reach several meters in height. It is characterized by erect, straight and thick stalks. Its leaves are long, reaching up to 130 cm in length, and wide, reaching up to 13 cm. The plant usually blooms in late July, and after flowering the flowers develop into coarse grains. Sorghum fruits abundantly, which gives it an attractive, exotic appearance. It is also characterized by a very well-developed root system, with roots reaching up to 1.5 meters deep which translates into incredible drought tolerance. This is what made it so popular in Africa. In Poland, in addition to bicolor sorghum, Sudanese sorghum and hybrids of the two species are also grown.

Sorghum occurrence and cultivation

Sorghum is a crop native to areas of Africa, where it is one of the most important edible plants. It is now grown mainly in countries with tropical and subtropical climates around the world, including the United States, Nigeria, India, Mexico and Brazil. In Poland, sorghum is also grown, although its importance is small. Due to the climate, sorghum has a limited period to produce ripe fruit, which contributes to its lower popularity in our country.

Conditions for growing sorghum vary and depend on the species and variety. The plant prefers a warm and dry environment, growing well in fertile and well-drained soils. Sorghum is a drought and heat tolerant plant, making it a popular choice in areas with unfavorable climatic conditions. It is also important to provide the plant with adequate sunlight and regular watering, especially during periods of drought. Sorghum is a crop with great potential for cultivation, but its success in a particular region depends mainly on adaptation to climatic conditions and proper care.

How to use sorghum? Application methods

Sorghum is primarily a consumer grain with specific properties that can be used to produce functional foods. Both the grain and the whole plant can be used for animal feed, as an energy additive to concentrate feed or as food for ornamental fowl. It can be subjected to ensiling or drying processes. It is also a valuable industrial raw material, especially in biotechnology. Sorghum cultivation can be used to produce biofuel. In some regions, such as southeastern Europe (Balkan countries), sorghum is grown with great success for the production of brooms and brushes (technical sorghum).
