Banksia, a dried flower worth knowing of

Banksia (Banksia) is considered an evergreen shrub or tree that is native to the silver family. It is represented by as many as 183 species, the most popular being Hokerana, Prionote, Menziesii. The plant is named after the British naturalist Joseph Banks, who was the first to describe it while traveling with Captain James Cook. Banksia is a pyrophyte - its seeds are released when exposed to high temperatures, such as during a bushfire. Its unique appearance makes dried banksia used in bouquets and compositions.

Banksia - look and characteristics of the plant

Banksia has long, narrow, lanceolate leaves with a distinctively serrated edge, which is a characteristic feature of the plant. The small, colorful flowers that gather into a large inflorescence with a cylindrical shape resemble a large flask in appearance. The bellows of the mature flask, also called a cone, contain seeds. Banksia cones and flowers come in a variety of shapes and colors. They are very hard and impossible to break once the center becomes woody.

Banksia - occurrence and cultivation

The homeland of banksia is Australia. It is the only place in the world (except New Zealand) where banksia can be found in its natural habitat. The largest concentrations of the plant can be found in the southwestern part of the continent, for example, in Kalbaria National Park. Outside Australia, banksia is found only in cultivation. This is due to the specific conditions that this endemic needs for proper development - high temperature, high sunlight.

Banksia is one of the difficult plants to grow. In Poland it can only be planted in pots - the soil temperature is too low to grow it in the ground. It requires constant access to light, which during the winter involves the use of special lampposts to illuminate the plants. Before the banksia reaches 1m in height it should be replanted every 12 months. It is not a species resistant to diseases, especially those caused by fungi.

Banksia - use in economy and floristics

Banksia is a characteristic plant of the Australian flora. It is a melliferous plant through which it was valued for centuries by the indigenous people, the Aborigines, who prepared infusions using it. In addition, banksia is food for animals of the Australian fauna - possums, bats, birds. The unique shape of banksia and its aesthetic qualities make it successfully used in floristics and natural decorations. Dried banksia will perfectly fit into compositions and bouquets of dried flowers with an exotic character. Due to its size, it is worth treating it as the main decorative element to which we can add a few sprigs of dried plants like: stabilized eucalyptus, olive leaves, timothy. It will be a beautiful addition to modern interiors - just place 2-3 pieces in a glass vase, and we guarantee that no guest will pass indifferently by this natural decoration.
