Canary grass (Phalaris canariensis), also known as canary grass, is an annual, herbaceous plant in the panicle family. The ease of cultivation has meant that canary grass has spread easily throughout the world. Its use is primarily in agriculture. In Poland, it is one of the most popular dried ornamental grasses for dry bouquets and crafts.
Canary grass- appearance and characteristics of the plant
Canary grass is characterized by straight, erect stems, usually reaching 60 to 120 cm in height. The leaves are long, narrow, usually light green in color. The flowers are gathered in spikes that contain seeds. One of the distinctive features of this grass are its spikes, which can take on different shades of color, from green through yellow to golden. These color variations give it a kind of ornamental character. Phalaris is excellent for drying.
Canary grass occurrence and cultivation
Phalaris is native to the Mediterranean and Asia Minor areas. However, due to its large-scale cultivation, it can now be found in various regions with mild climates. Phalaris grows best in sunny positions, but also tolerates partial shade. Cultivation requires well-drained soil of moderate fertility. It is more drought tolerant than some other plants in the grass family. It belongs to the plants resistant to pests.

Dried pahalaris is used primarily as a forage plant for livestock. Canary grass seeds are commonly used as an ingredient in bird feed, especially for canaries. They contain nutrients and are valued for promoting the healthy development of breeding birds. In some areas, canary grass moss is also considered a honey plant, attracting bees and other pollinating insects. As an ornamental grass, canary grass is great for dry bouquets and crafts. We can often find it in Easter palms and harvest wreaths. The availability of a wide range of colors and is durability makes it an alternative to another ornamental grass - lagurus or flax.
